Beginners would do best to start with the hand building classes initially, as this is the earliest forming method. Once they have become familiar with clay, they can progress to the throwing classes, which is the next step.
Hand building Course:
Familiar with the characteristics of clay, students will learn how to prepare clay, using different hand building techniques at classes, such as pinching, coiling, hollowing, slab building and impressing, as well as learning basic glazing methods. Hand building techniques are great for making free form pottery pieces.
Based on individual progress, instructors will guide students step by step through the process of making different textures and three-dimensional forms, like cups, vases, money boxes, ornaments, wind chimes, tea sets and masks.
Throwing Course:
By the rotating mechanism of the wheel, the solid ball of soft clay is shaped into a concentric hollow cylindrical form. According to the desired shape of the container which you are trying to achieve, you can either change the diameter in each throwing session, or you can alter the piece, with special techniques you will be shown.
Based on individual progression, instructors teach students about throwing, turning and glazing techniques; students will gradually learn how to make cups, bowls, plates, bottles, narrowed mouth vase, oval containers, boxes, component set, teapots and so on.
